The citadel of Machu Picchu is the most important tourist attraction of Cusco. Now known as one of the “Seven Wonders of the World” or ” Navel of the World”, currently is considered World Heritage by UNESCO and is the most visited destination of Peru because it has extraordinary architectural and landscape samples, preserving a peculiar flora and fauna.
This option is perfect for those who want to arrive to Machupicchu by train in a more leisurely fashion and comfortable than trekkers.
The train departs from Ollantaytambo or Poroy station in Cusco (depending on the availability) and takes you through one of the most incredible train journeys in the world until Aguas Calientes (2,000mt / 6600ft), where we will take a bus up to the magnificent site of Machu Picchu !!

DAY 1: CUSCO – POROY/OLLANTAYTAMBO – AGUAS CALIENTES
We will pass to your hotel in Cusco before the scheduled departure time of your train chosen to take you to either Ollantaytambo train station (this train station is located to 2 hours drive from Cusco) or possibly Poroy, which is only 30 minutes drive from Cusco (depending on availability train you choose and on weather conditions). The train ride is breathtaking with very comfortable seats. During the trip, you will see many glaciers and snow-capped peaks, lush, green valleys and Inca farming terraces on both sites of the valley. You can also see the many Inca ruins along the way and Km 82, where the Classic 4-day Inca Trail begins. After a while, you will enter the subtropical areas with bromeliads and ferns growing and then arrive in Aguas Calientes (2000m/ 6000 ft. above sea level), the town for Machu Picchu. Our tour guide will meet you just outside the train station (and before the market), and escort you to take the bus up to Machu Picchu. The bus trip up to the ruins is about 30 minutes. After arrival at the Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu, we will pass the control, where you must submit your admission ticket, from this place the guided tour will begin. You will visit the different main places of the city such as the Main Square, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial (Intihuatana “Place where the sun is tied”), the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows and the cemeteries. The duration of the tour is approximately two hours. At the end of the tour you will have free time to explore the ruins on your own. If you have booked a permit to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, from where you can see panoramic views of the entire Inca city of Machu Picchu, this will be your next adventure. Also you can opt to visit The Sun Gate is a 1 hour climb (and is free and available to all) which is also great to get those postcard pictures of the ruins from way above. More later you can take your lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge, Another option is return to Aguas Calientes for take your lunch at one of the restaurants. (Lunch is on your own).
The usual train departure time is in the afternoon to return to Ollantaytambo (present oneself at the station 30 minutes before departure time of your train chosen), where we will be waiting to take you to your hotel in our private transport.

*If you need a hotel in Cusco, just let us know when you plan to stay and we’ll do the rest. We can also include the transport “Airport – Hotel – Airport” in Cusco the days of arrival and departure by an additional $ 7.00 per person.
*****IMPORTANT NOTES *****
STUDENTS: If you booked your tour with your International Student Identity Card (ISIC) you must have this card and it must be valid for you to enter Machu Picchu. If you purchased a permit with the student discount and you do not bring your ISIC card or it is not valid at the time of your entrance, they will not allow you in this is National Park rules.
HUAYNA PICCHU: Only 400 people are allowed to climb this mountain per day. It needs to be booked in advanced and the price is $25 per person. It is about a 90 minute round-trip climb. It is recommended that you climb Huayna Picchu in the 10-11am time slot as otherwise you miss your guided tour. We recommend booking about 2 months in advance to secure your permit as it is very popular and they do sell out well in advance.
MACHUPICCHU + MOUNTAIN: You may also opt to climb Machu Picchu Mountain which is more difficult than Huayna Picchu and is 3-3½ hours round trip. The cost is $15 and also requires a permit in advance. Just let us know if you want to book this option.
EXTRA NIGHT: If you want to stay longer at Machu Picchu then you can book an extra night at Aguas Calientes village. Just let us know that you plan to stay an extra night and we will organize your return train for the next day. You can either organize your accommodation by yourself or we can assist with making bookings. If you were thinking of going back to Machu Picchu the next day, then you will need to purchase a new entrance ticket to get into Machu Picchu as well as the round-trip bus tickets to Aguas Calientes for around $75.
RETURN TRAIN TO CUSCO: The return train is posible the Expedition train which departs either at 2:55, 4:22 or 6:20 PM. The train that is booked depends on availability and is confirmed at your briefing. There is other option to upgrade your train to the Vistadome train which is an extra $50 per person round-trip. Please tell us of your preference at the time of booking. None of the trains go straight to Cusco, they only run either to Ollantaytambo or Poroy but in either case we will transfer you back by bus to your hotel (2 hours drive from Ollantaytambo and 25 minutes drive from Poroy).
