Overview

 This trip is one of the best alternative adventure treks to Machu Picchu, that combines adventure activities like biking, trekking through an original Inca trail recently discovered, rafting (only available in dry season) and zip line. During our expedition we will the opportunity to appreciate archaeological sites, beautiful valleys, spectacular glaciated peaks and the subtropical forest with a great endemic diversity of wild life (flora and fauna) , ending our journey in the majestic city of Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

 Day 1: CUSCO – SANTA MARIA: Bicycling (34 miles, 55 km)

(OPTIONAL RAFTING: $ 30 USD FROM APRIL TO DECEMBER)

Our transportation will pick you up from your accommodation at 08:00 am. Then we will start our trip with a journey time of 3 hours approx. passing through places with beautiful and enchanting landscapes along the Sacred Valley until to reach to Ollantaytambo where we will stop for a 30 minutes approximately to get water ,take a breakfast (this food is not included), buy some snacks or go to the hygienic services. then continue the trip to Cordillera Vilcanota thus reaching our highest point “ABRA MALAGA” (4,350 m.a.s.l), where begins our descent on mountain bike for about 4 hours , passing through for different ecosystems that characterize the Andes and the jungle until to arrive to Huamanmarca, where we will taste a lunch buffet. After the lunch our private bus will take the group for 20 minutes to the town of Santa Maria. after a short break, you will have the option to start a new adventure (only available in dry season), in this opportunity we will do the river rafting tour( optional) it´s an exciting route of 2 hours approximately on Vilcanota river where we will see beautiful sceneries, and we will find tides of category II,III&III+ (drought season) becoming an intense and exciting travel accompanied by an safety kayak to bring us the security that we need, the tides of this part of the river are considered one of the best in Cusco, and the warm climate make it an unforgettable travel, finishing the route, the vehicle will be waiting for us to come back to Santa Maria Village where we will enjoy our first dinner and accommodation.

Day 2: SANTA MARIA – SANTA TERESA: TREKKING (14 miles, 23 km)

 After a delicious breakfast, we will begin our first day of the trekking course to Santa Teresa at 6 AM. This day we will walk for seven hours through the rainforest enjoying a myriad of fruit plantations such as: avocados, maniocs, oranges, mangoes, cacao, coffee and coca shrubs. The first 2 hours of our tour is an ascent, but there will be various stops in order to learn a bit more about the rich variety of flora and fauna that can be found in the region we are in. One of these stops will be a family house where we will rest for 20 minutes and supply ourselves with more water and some regional tropical fruit. After resting for a bit, we will cross a section of the Inca Trail that historically connected Machupicchu with the city of Vilcabamba. Here, our guide will explain a bit more about the history of the Incas, as well as the system of communication that existed during that time. At this point, we will also see one of the most impressive views in all of the Huancarccasa Canyon. Afterwards, we will descend to the small town of Quellomayo where we will stop to eat lunch and rest in the near-by hammocks. We then continue 2 more hours on foot to the thermal baths of Cocalmayo, where you will have plenty of time to enjoy the naturally heated water of the baths.  After bathing, we will continue on to the final destination of the day, Santa Teresa, and spend our second night in a basic hostel.

Day 3: SANTA TERESA – AGUAS CALIENTES: Trekking (10 miles, 16 km)

(OPTIONAL CANOPY ZIPLINE: $ 30 USD)

 This day after breakfast we have the option start a new adventure, in this opportunity we will do the zip line tour (this activity is optional and the price is $30). In this case all participants will be divided into 2 groups – one who booked zip line and the other who did not. Those of you who reserved the zip line will be transported to the place where this activity is organized for doing this tour for about 2 hours. After the zip line this group will be taken by bus to the area known as the hydroelectric. The rest of the group will continue the trek for approx. 3 hours through the Aobamba valley until reaching the hydroelectric, where the entire group will come together again. Here we will all have lunch, and after a break we will continue walking along the railway for approx. 3 hours more. On the path we will have the opportunity to see a series of waterfalls and to admire the majesty of the mountains surrounding Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. We will reach to Aguas Calientes town around 4pm. Here you will spend the third and last night in a Hotel with hot water and comfortable beds. The rest of the afternoon you will have free time for visit the hot springs or explore this small town by your own. In the evening we will meet together in a local restaurant, where a delicious dinner will be waiting for us. Here the guide will give you a briefing with all the details for your visit to Machu Picchu.

Day 4: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU

 Today is the most important day in your expedition. Our last day of the tour begins very early in the morning in order to be able to watch the sun rise over the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Breakfast at 5.00 am at hotel, then we will take one of the first buses which takes 25 minutes up a switchback road to get to Machu Picchu. If you don’t care to take the bus and prefer to hike along the Inca trail just let your guide know so that he can show you the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu which will take about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Once in Machu Picchu Park, you will have a 2 hour guided tour. Where you will visit the different main places of this Inca city such as the Main Square, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sundial (Intihuatana “Place where the sun is tied”), the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows and the cemeteries. At the end of the tour you will have free time to explore the ruins on your own. If you have booked a permit to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain from where you can see panoramic views of the entire Inca city of Machu Picchu. That will be your next adventure. Also you can opt to visit The Sun Gate is a 1 hour climb (and is free and available to all) which is also great to get those postcard pictures of the ruins from way above. More later you can take your lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge, Another option is return to Aguas Calientes for take your lunch at one of the local restaurants. (Lunch is on your own).

The usual train departure time is in the afternoon to return to Ollantaytambo (present oneself at the station 30 minutes before departure time of your train chosen), where we will be waiting to take you to Cusco and then to your hotel in our private transport.

NOTE:

Climbing to the Sun Gate is always available at no cost.  This is also an easy way to climb to a high spot with lovely views of Machu Picchu below.

If you prefer to climb Huayna Picchu with its dramatic views, this needs to be booked in advance and is $25 per person.  It takes 45 minutes to the top and is quite challenging.

The other option is to climb Machu Picchu Mountain which is 90 minutes straight up and is more difficult than Huayna Picchu. The price is $15 per person and also requires to be booked in advance.  This is probably the most beautiful and dramatic of all views, but all three options are lovely and will result in amazing photos.

It could be either: Hotel Casa Andina, Hotel la Cabaña, Hotel Flower’s House, Hotel Muyurina or Royal Inti Inn, which will depend of their availability. They all include private rooms, hot showers, private bathrooms, TV cable, towels, soaps, breakfasts, Wi-Fi, and storage. Of course these hotels can be upgraded to another hotel like Inka Terra, Hotel Hatun Inti classic, Sumaq Machupicchu, or Santury logde. *****IMPORTANT NOTES *****

 STUDENTS: If you booked your tour with your International Student Identity Card (ISIC) you must have this card and it must be valid for you to enter Machu Picchu.  If you purchased a permit with the student discount and you do not bring your ISIC card or it is not valid at the time of your entrance, they will not allow you in this is National Park rules.

HUAYNA PICCHU: Only 400 people are allowed to climb this mountain per day. It needs to be booked in advanced and the price is $25 per person. It is about a 90 minute round-trip climb. It is recommended that you climb Huayna Picchu in the 10-11am time slot as otherwise you miss your guided tour. We recommend booking about 2 months in advance to secure your permit as it is very popular and they do sell out well in advance.

MACHU PICCHU + MONTAIN: You may also opt to climb Machu Picchu Mountain which is more difficult than Huayna Picchu and is 3-3½ hours round trip. The cost is $15 and also requires a permit in advance. Just let us know if you want to book this option.

EXTRA NIGHT:  If you want to stay longer at Machu Picchu then you can book an extra night at Aguas Calientes village. Just let us know that you plan to stay an extra night and we will organize your return train for the next day. You can either organize your accommodation by yourself or we can assist with making bookings. If you were thinking of going back to Machu Picchu the next day, then you will need to purchase a new entrance ticket to get into Machu Picchu as well as the round-trip bus tickets to Aguas Calientes for around $75.

RETURN TRAIN TO CUSCO: The return train is the Expedition train or the Executive or Economy class train which departs either at 2:55, 4:12, 4:42 or 6:20 PM. The train that is booked depends on availability and is confirmed at your briefing. There is an option to upgrade your train to the Vistadome train which is an extra $50 per person round-trip. Please tell us of your preference at the time of booking. None of the trains go straight to Cusco, they only run either to Ollantaytambo or Poroy but in either case we will transfer you back by bus to your hotel (2 hours from Ollantaytambo and 25 minutes from Poroy).
